A'yal Zayed: What "Children of Zayed" Means to Emiratis
Share
Ask an Emirati what A'yal Zayed (عيال زايد) means and you won't get a dictionary definition — you'll get a feeling. Literally, it translates to "Children of Zayed." In practice, it's an identity.
Who was Zayed?
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan is the founding father of the United Arab Emirates — the leader who united seven emirates into one nation in 1971 and shaped its character: generous, tolerant, ambitious, and deeply tied to the land. His portrait hangs in majlises and coffee shops across the country not because it must, but because people want it there.
So what does A'yal Zayed mean?
Calling Emiratis "the children of Zayed" says: we were raised on his values. It's used with pride ("A'yal Zayed don't turn away a guest"), with humour, and in moments of national celebration — you'll hear it everywhere around UAE National Day on December 2nd. It's belonging, gratitude and identity compressed into two words.
